The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case centering on whether the federal legalization of hemp can help a Pennsylvania man avoid a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence for gun possession that was triggered by his past marijuana convictions.
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), a 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, says he didn’t “literally” mean it when he suggested President Joe Biden start smoking marijuana. But he maintains that it’s “absolutely absurd” cannabis remains banned while alcohol is legal.
Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) said during a hearing that marijuana criminalization is one of the “root causes” that contribute to poverty and “create environments where violence proliferates” at a time when major politicians openly discuss their own cannabis use.
“Now they’ve got records and can’t get jobs because they were arrested on marijuana charges when we have had presidents and senators bragging about their pot usage.”
